Stop and notice some of the sounds around you right now. The sound of the computer humming, the birds in the background of my recording, the car that passes by in the distance. Tis there a television on in the next room. The scrape of your nails on your skin as you scratch your leg. All these sounds present you with an excellent opportunity to experience the serenity that comes from mindful listening.
Stop whatever you are doing and just listen [wlm_firstname]. This sounds like a simple exercise, but you do require some discipline to stop your mind wandering off.
If you are new to this experience then you might want to begin by deciding how long you will spend in the exercise. Gove yourself at least five minutes to start with. Set yourself an alarm that you can rely on so that you don’t spend time checking the clock or thinking about how much time has ticked by. Do that now [wlm_firstname]. I’ll wait….
Let the sounds around be your anchor right in this moment
Don’t judge what you hear or analyse the sounds, just listen, observe and experience them.
If you become restless or impatient, notice these feelings and allow them, but dont react to them.
Stay with the sounds.
Listen intently, but without straining.
This is all about being “here and now” – nothing more.
Don’t try and determine the origin or type of sounds you hear, just listen and absorb the experience of their texture and resonance with your being. If you recognise the sound then label it with what you know it to be and move on, allowing your ears to catch new sounds.
The idea is to just listen and allow yourself to become fully entwined with what is around you, without preconception or judgement. Just be with it.
Notice it
Observe it
This process is designed to help you open your ears, and your heart to the world around you in an observant and non-judgemental way So much of what we experience is influenced by our thoughts of past experiences. Being mindful and experiencing the world around us in this way allows us to let go of the thoughts that influence or experience and just authentically be with things as they are. It is in this place of mindfulness that we will begin to hear our own soul speak to us.
