I Can Fly
I’ve been painting in the last little while.
This image is an experiment on wings. Giving space to my work is unusual. But I like it.
Its really unusual to see a canvas so bare. In real life this canvas is very textured, It has layers and layers and layers behind it. It was an experiment. It looks bare, but in reality it is not. So much work went on behind what you can see now. So much has gone into building this so that kind of expansive space is possible. The nakedness of it makes me a little nervous, that kind of expansive openness usually does.
It represents to me the way in which our experienced build on one an other and as they build we learn more and more. Particularity as a I grow older I see the wisdom and the value in what has gone before. This canvas was actually painted on firstly by a house guest who spent some time here in the studio. she expressed herself in words and colours all over it and then left it behind, just like all the parts of her world she no longer needs. this was an importanat start to this work for me because I can see that all the experiences of my younger years and those of the my sister, my mother and my grandmothers before me have filled me with a wisdom that enables me to fly. its not just us that builds our strength – we also take from the lessons of our friends and family and this is what enables us to grow in ways we may not have been able to with out the generosity of their shared experiences.
Acrylic, ink & chalk on canvas (and who knows what else is underneath)
