Creating a home yoga nest

April 24, 2018

In my home, the two most important rooms in the house are the art studio and the yoga room. My yoga room was in need of a bit of a make over so last week I got stuck in to it.

I wanted to create a space that has an overwhelming sense of calm that washes over me the minute I walk in there. I want to create a space that nurtures my learning, my growth and my spiritual journey.

Here are some tips I have learned that I hope will help you to create your perfect yoga sanctuary at home.

Clean up and de-clutter. my yoga room (2)

I only have items that are functional or that are beautiful and contribute to my sense of calm in the room. So the first thing is to remove that doesn’t serve either purpose and design your space to suit your specific needs.

Create calm.

I like to go for calm muted colours trying not to use anything too bold and attention grabbing. Muted, cooler tones or warm whites will recede rather than demand full attention. I’ve tried to use green as my key colour with white walls.

Set the mood with lighting.my yoga room (1)

I love soft lighting and it immediately makes me feel calm and at ease. I think in every room in the house, lighting is incredibly important and has a significant impact on your mood and well-being. I have lightweight cotton curtains in a dark mossy green to help dim the light. I have warm fairly lights for the night time to create a wonderful mood. The room has a beautifully filtered sky light in the roof that is perfect for morning yoga, gently letting the daylight flow into the room.

Be intentional with accessories.

Because I have the sky light I am able to have a number of plants in the room. I’ve added to this by making a couple of large terrariums. Ive added a HUGE picture that takes up an entire wall. I adore the image of the forest and I wanted it to be huge, because I wanted to create the feeling of an open space, like I could step straight into the forest through that image.

I have an aromatherapy diffuser that I use daily, a scented candle for night time sessions and meditations and I have made the most delicious aromatherapy room spray. I’ve also made sure my meditation corner is lush, soft and comfortable. I wanted to make this a room I wanted to go into and spend time in there comfortable and calm, and willing to explore both my yoga and meditation practice.

I would really love to see your yoga or mediation space, and if you have tips of your own about creating a beautiful home sanctuary. Share your images and ideas here or on Facebook. I’d love to see what your doing.
