Imagination or Inspiration?

February 16, 2015

Which is better?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately; which one is better to facilitate solid creative outcomes, the actual work. I flutter about, daydream and get distracted a lot. But 2015 is going to be the year of productivity!

Are we better when we constrain ourselves, spiral in, deep within our own mind and heart; when we meditate, or stop interacting with others, practice a brush stroke over and over – are we forced to use our imagination, to find the sense of creative energy from inside?

Or, are we better when look around us, spiral out, spend our time hunting for nature’s treasures, seeing the curve in a bird’s back, finding beauty in the shapes of houses, when we seek inspiration from that which is around us?

I’m not sure, but I’d like to experience each of these more, but be conscious, pay attention to what and how I create. I suspect they both be effective, but in their own way. When I think of looking outside myself for inspiration I immediately think about seed pods, trees, and lush green nature reserves.

When I think about being still and listening to my heart space, I immediately think of sketching squat little monsters…..
